HVWTA Statement - China Tariff

Hunter Valley Wine & Tourism Association (“HVWTA”) welcomes the announcement on Thursday 28 March 2024 by the Chinese Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) to remove all import duties on Australian bottled wine to China. This move signifies a positive step for the Hunter Valley wine industry and creates opportunities for our wine producers, both those who previously exported, and those looking to export into this market in the future.

HVWTA acknowledge the efforts of the Australian Government, and the important coordination role of Australian Grape & Wine, Wine Australia and NSW Wine in reaching this agreement. We welcome any ongoing support from the NSW Government in providing assistance for businesses to promote their wines in-market again.

Commenting on the announcement Chris Tyrrell, President of HVWTA noted “The removal of tariffs provides  welcome positive news for the Australian wine industry. For the Hunter Valley this will allow our premium wines to once again be showcased in one of the world’s largest markets. Whilst we acknowledge that the market opportunity has changed, we look forward to re-introducing Hunter Valley wines to Chinese consumers"
