V24 Update

V24 Update

As the 2024 vintage enters its final stages now, all the of the winemakers in the region are more than happy with the quality of what they have in their cellars. The vintage was one the earliest on record, starting in the second week of January. Warm and dry conditions in spring 2023 meant the vines were all carrying a lower crop than normal, which is also part of the reason the ripening happened quicker than normal. The harvest period has been relatively stress-free in terms of weather, with warm, dry conditions being the majority of the January weather patterns. Across the region, yields are averaging approximate 20-30% down on a normal vintage, however quality is extremely high. Semillon and Verdelho both came on quickly with great fruit intensity and acidity, whilst the chardonnay ripened slower and the resulting wines will be elegant and have good depth of flavour. The Shiraz is being harvested currently and the early blocks which are now fermenting all have outstanding deep colours and rich flavours.

Vibrant Verdelhos

Vibrant Verdelhos

When you think of Hunter Valley wine, Semillon, Shiraz and Chardonnay probably all come to mind but have you tried our vibrant Verdelhos? While Verdelho may not command the same level of recognition as our esteemed Semillon and Chardonnay varietals, it doesn't aspire to. Rather, it holds its own as a delightful introductory wine, particularly suited for those seeking an occasional indulgence. Bursting with vibrant and robust flavours reminiscent of a refreshing fruit salad, it embodies the essence of vitality in every sip. Verdelho isn't a wine meant for deep contemplation; rather, it beckons you to share its convivial nature with friends, offering a perfect accompaniment to moments of relaxation and camaraderie. Prepare to be pleasantly surprised by how swiftly each glass is savoured and enjoyed in the company of loved ones. Here are some of our top picks for Vibrant Hunter Verdelhos

Brokenwood Wines is pleased to announce Stuart Hordern's promotion to Chief Winemaker

Brokenwood Wines is pleased to announce Stuart Hordern's promotion to Chief Winemaker
Stuart's dedication to the craft has been evident from the beginning. He grew up on a family vineyard and has been working with vines since he was old enough to drive a tractor. He also gained invaluable experience working for Tyrrell's and undertaking several vintages in France.
During his time at Brokenwood, Stuart and his team have significantly contributed to our wines' quality. Our Brokenwood Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz has maintained its position as the highest level of Langton's Classification of collectible Australian wines - 1st Classified and remains the only red wine in New South Wales to hold this position. Our winery has also been awarded a Halliday 5-star red winery, with our wines receiving numerous gold medals and trophies at various wine shows.
Some notable wine show wins from 2023 include the National Wine of Provence Trophy for the Indigo Vineyard Chardonnay (2012, 2016 & 2022) and the F Miller & Co Prize for Winemaker of National Wine of Provence, both from the Royal Adelaide Wine Show.
In addition to his winemaking expertise, Stuart has been instrumental in leading our region through the post-COVID era as the President of the Hunter Valley Wine Tourism Association for the last two years. We are confident that Stuart's expertise and leadership will continue to drive our business forward.
As we begin Vintage 2024, let us raise a glass to celebrate Stuart's promotion. Please join me in congratulating Stuart on this well-deserved recognition.
