Top spots to camp in the Hunter Valley - Sleep Under the Stars this Spring

It’s no secret that the Hunter Valley is home to some of the most incredible, scenic National Parks that NSW has to offer. These wildlife-filled wonders are a playground for outdoor enthusiasts wanting to unwind, escape and reconnect with nature. From scenic mountain brim hikes boasting with native flora and fauna to secluded oasis campsites under the milky way, the Hunter Valley is the perfect spot to trek off grid and switch off for a few days.

Sheepskin Hut Campground

Deep in the Wollemi wilderness is a peaceful valley where you can spend your days hiking, mountain biking and 4WDing at Sheepskin Hut Campground. The remote location and rough dirt trails, off Putty Road, make this campground a favourite getaway for 4WD lovers. 

Getting there is part of the adventure, with trails offering spectacular views sweeping over Mount Monundilla, Little Yengo and the dormant volcanic peak of Mount Yengo, a significant natural wonder with a rich Aboriginal cultural significance.

Gap Creek Campground 

Surround yourself with stunning sky-high red cedars and blue gums at the family-friendly Gap-Creek Campground located in the Watagans National Park. Roughly an hour drive from Pokolbin, this campsite is popular, offering everything you need for a relaxing private getaway, with immediate access to several walking tracks including the stunning Gap Creek Waterfall.

McNamara Park Camping

One of the larger campsites with easy access, McNamara Park sits at the foothills of the Brokenback Mountain Range in the Hunter Valley’s hidden oasis of Broke Fordwich. A free campsite with basic facilities, spend your time in Broke Fordwich disconnecting and reconnecting. Explore the Broke Fordwich wine and food trail and discover the abundance of boutique, family owned and operated wineries and cellar doors the sub-region has to offer. 

*Camping is only allowed for a maximum of three nights, this is a free campsite. 

Finchley Campground

If you are seeking a secluded camping spot that still offers plenty to see and do, be sure to map out a trip to the Finchley Campground. Located high up in the scenic Yengo National Park, this site offers a peaceful escape from everyday life where the only crowds you will find are the flocks of black cockatoos and galahs or lounges of resident goannas. Only a short walk from the campground is the special Finchley Aboriginal Area, created in 1976 to protect one of the largest and most accessible engraving sites in the region. A spectacular lookout is right nearby as well: Finchley Trig, framing Mount Yengo in the distance.

Wine Country Tourist Park 

Located in the beautiful Hunter Valley, Wine Country Tourist Park is a small family owned park and an ideal base to experience everything the area has to offer. As the closest caravan park to the vineyards, you won’t waste any time travelling to the many cellar doors and restaurants that have made this region famous to wine lovers and foodies from all over Australia and the globe.

With shady trees and grassy spots, there are many options for tents, caravans, campers and motorhomes. Plus for those without a rig or tent, Wine Country Tourist Park also offers two bedroom poolside cabins and a 3 bedroom cottage for those who prefer a little glamping instead of camping.

*Please note this is not a free campground. Low Season (May – August) Prices from: $30 p/night Sun-Thurs and $40 p/night Fri-Sat. High Season (September – April) Prices from: $35 p/night Sun-Thurs and $45 p/night Fri-Sat. 

Broken Back Campground 

Escape to new heights at the Broken Back Campground featuring overlooking views of the Hunter Valley and surrounding state forest. Accessible by 4WD only, this hidden gem campsite has limited facilities - perfect for those real off-grid adventurer seekers. 

*Please note this camp site is only accessible by 4WD and does not have any amenities. This is a free camp ground that does not require a booking. 

Bulga Recreation Ground

Roughly twenty minutes south-west of Singleton in towards the Upper Hunter, the Bulga Recreation ground is a large free camping site featuring a large playground, tennis court, amenities and allows your four-legged friends to come along for the adventure - perfect for the whole family. 

*This is a free campsite that does not require a booking.
