HUNTER VALLEY, 1 December 2019: For the first time ever Australia's great gift to the wine world, Hunter Valley Semillon, is being infused into gin to create a unique Australian spirit for white wine lovers.

Just in time for Christmas, boutique Hunter Valley producer Gundog Estate has created the small batch artisan Gundog Dry Gin infused with the premium 2019 The Chase Semillon. This Semillon comes exclusively from the famous Somerset vineyard in Pokolbin which was planted in 1969.

"We have a restless spirit here at Gundog and we're always looking for ways to be inclusive and cater for a broader range of tastes beyond wine. A s well as being wine and craft beer lovers, we're also gin fanatics so producing our own small-batch gin is an obvious next step as we expand our range of quality artisan drinks," Gundog Estate Winemaker Matt Burton said.

"It’s a great time to be making gin. Australians are taking out gongs at the London Gin Awards, something that was unheard of less than 10 years ago. There’s massive enthusiasm here and around the world for clever, tasty gin and that fits beautifully with our approach to business – creating artisan products that enhance the lives of our customers.”

According to world renowned wine writer and critic Jancis Robinson MW, “Hunter Valley Semillon is one of Australia’s great gifts to the wine world”. So, it was a natural inspiration for Gundog Estate’s first gin creation.

“We wanted to create a gin that reflected the Hunter Valley region and acknowledged our heritage. Drawing inspiration from the unique personality of Hunter Semillon, the Gundog Dry Gin is a bright, Semillon-esque spirit with a citrus-led nose and palate. We've included botanicals such as green apple peel, angelica root, lime peel, lemon myrtle, star anise, cassia bark , cloves, almonds, honeycomb and, of course, juniper and coriander seeds , " Matt said.

Gundog Estate has teamed up with Newcastle craft distiller Newy Distillery to create the new Gundog Dry Gin.

“Here at Newy Distillery we have a passion for the craft of making gin and are honoured to be able to work together to design a truly unique spirit that blends a range of botanicals and Gundog’s amazing 2019 Semillon,” Founder Luke Storey said.

“It has been triple distilled to create a smooth yet complex style, with the subtle flavours creating a great tasting gin that you can easily sip away at.”

According to a recent International Wine and Spirits research report, gin consumption rose almost 17 per cent over the past year and consumption of locally made gin grew even faster - up 33 per cent over the same period.

The first batch of Gundog Dry Gin will be on sale at the Gundog Estate Cellar Doors in the Hunter Valley and Gundaroo from 6 December and online at www.gundogestate.com.au .
