Vintage is when the main action takes place in the winery; the vineyards are a mass of pickers, the roads filled with rattling tractors towing bins laden with fruit & harvesters light the vineyards at night; the once a year that the expensive equipment in a winery is used; when the wineries swell with additional staff as they work around the clock to crush the grapes & get the juice into tank before the grapes begin to deteriorate; the one opportunity the winemakers have to showcase their talent & skills.

All this action brings heightened anticipation & excitement to the region, you can feel it in the air. For the Novice it’s a great chance to see the process from the vine to the winery, you can actually see it taking place, smell it & taste the juice & grapes. For the Enthusiast vintage gives a better understanding of the seasonal nuances & opportunity to see the winemaking skills & techniques unfold.

Several wineries offer tours, Wine Clubs invite their Members to Vintage events with hands on opportunities, Cellar Doors are abreast of the latest activities & full of stories to tell and from time to time you’ll be offered some freshly picked grapes or crushed juice to sample.

Aromas of grapes & ferments fill the air, as you drive around (especially early in the day) you’ll see pickers & tractors in the vines.
