Young Hunter Winemaker wins 2016 Trevor Drayton ScholarshiP
More than 100 guests gathered at Carrington Place Bar & Restaurant on Sunday February 7th for a celebration of the fine wine and food of the region and the announcement of the recipient of the 2016 Trevor Drayton Scholarship.
The Trevor Drayton Scholarship was established to recognise the career of former iconic Hunter winemaker, Trevor Drayton, and is dedicated to assisting young people wishing to pursue a career in the wine and food industry.
Aspiring young Hunter Valley winemaker, Jacob Wiseman, was announced as the Scholarship recipient and received $5,000 from the Scholarship Foundation. The cheque was presented by Mrs. Caroline Drayton, Trevor’s mother and the matriarch of the pioneering Hunter Valley winemaking family.
Twenty-four (24) year old Jacob is currently employed at the Keith Tulloch Wines on Hermitage Road and studying for his Bachelor of Wine Science with Charles Sturt University.
Jacob explained to the guests that he had applied to the Foundation seeking support to travel to the famous French wine regions of Burgundy or Bordeaux where he plans to further his education in the ancient art of winemaking and involve himself in the Northern hemisphere vintage season.
While Carrington Place Chef and Owner Scott Webster maintained a steady stream of fine food from the kitchen across the day, Drayton’s Family Wines, Travertine Wines, Ironbark Hill and Peter Drayton Wines treated guests to a selection of the Hunter’s finest, including the 2007 Drayton’s Joseph Shiraz, the last vintage produced by Trevor before the accident that claimed his life.
A special treat for guests was the opportunity to taste the first vintage the scholarship winner had produced under his own label, Wise One Wines. The 2014 Hunter Semillon, produced in limited quantity, was enjoyed by all and given very good reviews.
